SOR founder Roy Dunlap realized his dream of having his own commercial machine shop shortly after he left the Navy following World War II. Starting small with a grubstake of $2,000 and one employee, he opened the doors of MechniArts Associates in 1946 and began manufacturing the Tel-A-Dial – an attachment for platform scales used in feed stores.

The new company got its first big break when a TWA employee told Roy that the varying widths of seats in their aircraft created a problem of having to carry and store different sized serving trays in order to accommodate its passengers. Roy, who was always good with mechanical challenges, designed and built a single serving tray that adjusted to fit all seats with the turn of dial. Soon his trays were standard equipment in the entire TWA fleet.

It was 1956 and the airlines tray table business was doing well, yet Roy had been searching for an idea for a new product. He longed to pursue his dream of creating something unique, a product that would be the best in the world, that he could manufacture to ensure the excellence of both quality and customer service.

One day while eating lunch at the neighborhood diner, two men came in who had spent the morning in the field filling oil tanks. Roy listened to their frustration that every tank either hadn’t been completely full or had overflowed. Roy’s ears perked up when he heard one of the men explode, “when is someone going to make a detector that’s accurate!” He left his lunch half eaten and hurried back to his office, knowing he had found his idea. He studied the existing detectors to learn why they weren’t accurate, and then began designing his own.

To further develop his concept, he contacted Ben Brown, a physics professor at Kansas University. Ben and Roy worked together refining Roy’s idea, while also developing a deep friendship that lasted until Ben’s death years later. Together they created the Static-O-Ring. This simple but innovative design resulted in a detector of flawless accuracy that would change the power generation and oil and gas industries forever. At the time, Roy didn’t realize that his dream had come true.

During the next two decades, the “Static O-Ring” pressure detector continued to gain in popularity spreading across the Midwest until the company became known primarily for its accurate, dependable product. Taking advantage of this well-earned reputation, the company changed its name from MechniArts to Static O-Ring. Three factories later due to expanding business, the company began developing additional products to serve its markets. The first was a vapor-pressure temperature detector in 1978. With a new product line the name Static O-Ring no longer applied so the company name was changed to its present moniker, SOR.
